Explanation of Categories
Teacher’s personal attendance Each teacher begins with 10 points. One point is deducted for each missed day of work. Days that are excused are: work-related days (professional development or an assignment out of the classroom by the Principal), death of an immediate family member, and sickness of a child. There are no other excused absences.
Disciplinary Referrals Each teacher begins with 10 points. For each incident that requires a disciplinary referral, there will be a deduction of 1 point (each incident not each student). For example: a student incident happens in the classroom and the teacher cannot handle the incident, and s/he sends the five students to the office; one point is deducted from the original 10 points.
Professional development outside of school Each teacher will obtain a point for each Supervisor-approved professional development session he or she attends. Both in-school and outside of school sessions are valid. Points are earned by Event/Conference, not per day (e.g. a one day and two day conference each are worth one point). The teacher must submit his or her receipt/certificate to provide proof of attendance. Maximum points available are 10 (examples: MAPSA conference is 1 point, workshops related to education, in-services provided by Universities, WRESA, etc.).
Staff Input Each staff member will be given the opportunity to vote for the most effective teacher in his or her building. A teacher is not allowed to vote for him/herself. Votes will be per campus with the top vote getter at each building getting 10 points, second place will get 9 points, third place will get 8 and so forth.
School Participation Teachers earn points for voluntarily attending school programs (examples-spring programs, serving on Foundation committees, PTA meetings, school club meetings, Board meetings, athletic contests, etc). A point can be earned for each program attended. Student leaders such as coaches and club advisors will receive one point for each practice or meeting attended. Maximum of 20 points can be earned. Parent-Teacher conferences are not included.
Student Votes Each student will be given the opportunity to vote for the most outstanding teacher in their building. Students may vote for any teacher, regardless of subject. Votes will be calculated and the teacher with the highest votes in a building will receive 5 pts, the second highest will receive 4 pts, and so on…in the event of a tie, both teachers will receive the points.
Principal Evaluation Each building principal will evaluate teachers and assign points (from 1 to 10) to each teacher.
Parent Interaction Teachers will be required to submit their parent communication log or other documentation showing their contacts with parents throughout the year. Fifteen points will be awarded to teachers who provide sufficient evidence of frequent contact with parents for a range of reasons, both positive and negative. A teacher receiving fifteen points will show clearly that parent communication was a significant priority throughout the school year. Ten points will be awarded for teachers who show credible, regular contact with parents for common reasons including some that are positive. While teachers receiving either fifteen or ten points will both be considered very good parent communicators, those receiving fifteen will have evidenced exceptional commitment to the teacher-student-parent relationship.
Student Attendance[1] Teachers will receive up to 20 points based on the average daily attendance of their assigned students. Students will be assigned to teachers as follows:
K-4 teachers will be assigned to their classroom students. 5-8 teachers will be assigned to their homeroom students.
Each teacher will be expected to make extra efforts to ensure regular daily attendance. The highest point earners will have the highest attendance.
Student Retention1 Teachers will receive up to 20 points based on the percentage of their assigned students that complete the school year with the Academy. Students will be assigned to teachers as follows:
K-4 teachers will be assigned to their classroom students. 5-8 teachers will be assigned to their homeroom students.
Much like student attendance, teachers will be expected to make extra efforts to ensure their students do not transfer to another school, drop out, etc. There is one exemption, which is for documented relocations of more than 10 miles.
Academic Achievement
General Education Teachers in Grades K-2 At the end of the year, all students will be assessed in reading through the DIBELS assessment. Teachers will be ranked against each other based on grade level (e.g. the four 1st grade teachers will be granted points based on their students’ relative level of success. The teacher with the highest achieving students on average will earn 100 points, the next highest 75 points, then 50 points and 25 points). Points will be adjusted based on the number of teachers at each grade.
General Education Teachers in Grades 3-4 At end of year, all students will be assessed against math and English GLCE standards through Performance Series. Teachers will be ranked against each other based on grade level (e.g. the four 4th grade teachers will be granted points based on their students’ relative level of success. The teacher with the highest achieving students on average will earn 100 points, the next highest 75 points, then 50 points and 25 points). Points will be adjusted based on the number of teachers at each grade.
Core Subject Teachers in Grades 5-8 At end of year, all students will be assessed against course KC4/GLCE standards through a teacher-developed and administrator-approved assessment through Assess2Know, MTA’s electronic standards assessment system. The assessment will be approved by both the building principal and assessment coordinator and shall be a valid measure of student mastery of course outcomes. Teachers will be ranked against each other based on subject (e.g. the four math teachers will be granted points based on their students’ relative level of success. The math teacher with the highest achieving students on average will earn 100 points, the next highest 75 points, then 50 points and 25 points). Points will be adjusted based on the number of teachers at each grade.
[1] With respect to Student Attendance and Student Retention, one anticipated concern is the extent to which a teacher can be reasonably expected to have an appreciable influence. We recognize there are many factors affecting attendance and retention outside of our control. However, there are factors that are undeniably within our control: attendance improves when children and parents have a close relationship with a teacher; have school personnel that expect daily attendance and zealously and caringly follow-up on absences; have school personnel that work to solve problems, not just report them; have school leadership that leverages resources to remove impediments such as transportation, uniform fees, parent schedule conflicts, etc.
