Student and Family Rights Concerning School Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that Michigan Technical Academy afford parents/guardians and students who are 18 years of age or older (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to a student’s education records.

Briefly, those rights are:

1. The right to inspect and copy the student’s education records;
2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records;
3. The right to permit disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that the FERPA or Michigan law authorizes disclosure without consent;
4. The right to prohibit the release of “directory information” concerning the parent’s/guardian’s child (Directory information for this Academy includes: the student’s name; picture; major field of study; participation in recognized activities and sports and related information; grade placement; and honors and awards received.);
5. The right to prohibit the release of directory information concerning the parent’s/guardian’s child to Armed Forces or Armed Forces Academies’ Recruiting personnel. (By law, Armed Forces and Armed Forces Academies are entitled to receive directory information for students in grades 9-12 that include: the student’s name, address, and telephone number [if listed].); and
6. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School District to comply with FERPA requirements.

Any parent(s)/guardian(s) or “eligible student” may prohibit the release of any or all of “directory information” by delivering a written objection to the building Superintendent within 30 days of the date of this notice. No “directory information” will be released within this time period, unless the parent(s)/guardian(s) or “eligible student” is specifically informed otherwise.
